Test driving a car is often the most fun part of the purchase process. After comparing features and checking prices, you can finally get behind the wheel. Out on the open road.
But your test drive is more than a joyride. There are some important things to look for to ensure you choose the perfect vehicle – and Burns Chevrolet of Rock Hill has outlined them here!
Before The Test Drive
Before you even put the key in the ignition, consider the following:
- Appearance: While you’ve likely seen the vehicle online, do you like the color in person? Do you like the interior/exterior design? Are there any dents, rust, etc if the vehicle is pre-owned?
- Cargo/passenger space: Does this vehicle meet your family’s needs? Does it have enough room for car seats, groceries, sporting equipment, etc?
- Entry & exit: Can you easily get in and out of the vehicle?
- Comfort: Are you comfortable in the driver’s seat? Can adjustments be made (pedals, steering wheel, etc) to accommodate your height?
- Interior gauges/controls: Are the gauges easy to read? Are the controls simple to operate? Do the turn signals work?
- Visibility: Are there large blind spots? Can you see well out of the mirrors, both rearview and side?
Driveability
Once you’ve left the lot, access the following to determine if the vehicle is a good fit:
- Acceleration: Does the car speed up and shift smoothly? Do you hear any concerning noises?
- Handling: Is the car responsive? Can you feel the road through the steering wheel?
- Braking: Are the brakes responsive?
- Overall ride quality: Is there a lot of road noise? Would you be comfortable driving long distances in it?
- Comfort & entertainment: How is the infotainment system? The A/C system?
Driver Assistance Features
Many vehicles today are equipped with innovative driver assist systems and safety features to minimize danger on the road. Be sure to pay attention to the functionality of these safety systems when test driving a new vehicle:
- Backup camera: The backup camera is designed to warn the driver of objects behind them, so put the vehicle in reverse and test it out!
- Display: Is the screen large enough/easy to read?
- Cruise control: Once you’re on the highway, test the cruise control.
- Navigation: What navigation features are available? Do they meet your needs?
Ask your salesperson about other available safety technologies, like lane keeping assist, blind spot monitor and lane departure warnings – all designed to alert the driver if they drift outside of the lane markings.
