Your vehicle is programmed to tell you when something is wrong, using dashboard warning lights to keep you informed. Here at your trusted Chevrolet dealership, our certified service technicians urge drivers to bring in their vehicles as soon as a warning light appears. Ignoring it could damage your vehicle or result in more costly repairs.

The Burns Chevrolet team has listed some common warning lights below, detailing what they mean and what action is required. Read on to learn more!

  • Check Engine Light
Most check engine lights are shaped like an engine or may even say CHECK ENGINE. The yellow color indicates that service is needed in the near future. In most vehicles, a flashing check engine light signals that you have a serious problem that could cause serious damage if ignored.
  • Engine Temperature Light
The engine temperature light looks like a red thermometer that – when illuminated – indicates that the engine is overheating. The red color means that immediate action is required. Because continuing to drive could cause extreme engine damage, be sure to pull over and turn off your vehicle. You may also notice smoke coming from under the hood.
  • Oil Pressure
The engine oil pressure light often appears as a red oil can dripping oil. This warning light could mean that oil is not circulating properly through the engine or that oil levels are low. While a simple oil change might be the solution, an oil leak could also be to blame. If this light appears, stop by our Service Center today – conveniently located near Fort Mill, SC and Charlotte, NC today!
  • Transmission Temperature
Your vehicle’s transmission temperature light looks like a yellow or red thermometer surrounded by a gear and an exclamation point. This warning lets you know that your gearbox’s internal components are reaching a critical point due to heavy towing, low transmission fluid levels or excessive wear.
  • Battery Warning
This warning light, shaped like the outline of a battery with a plus/minus symbol on either side, indicates that your car’s charging system needs attention. The battery itself could be the problem, or one of the following could cause the light to appear: loose or corroded battery cable, worn alternator, broken accessory belt, or another electrical concern. It’s best to schedule service immediately instead of waiting until your battery fails and requires a jump.
  • Tire Pressure Warning
This warning light is depicted as a yellow tire with an exclamation point in the middle. It means that one of the vehicle’s tires is underinflated, and in many modern vehicles, the light even tells you which tire needs attention. Season temperature changes may trigger more sensitive pressure monitoring systems.
  • Anti-Lock Brakes
Yellow ABS warning lights indicate that something is wrong with your vehicle’s braking system. Because anti-lock brakes keep your car in contact with the road, their malfunction could prevent the system from activating.
  • Brake Warning
If you notice a red circle with an exclamation point or “P” in the middle, or simply the word “BRAKE,” your parking brake may be engaged. If this is not the case, the light could be telling you that there is an issue with the braking system – such as worn brake pads, worn brake discs or low brake fluid levels.
  • Low Fuel Indicator
This warning light is one we’ve all seen before! It simply means that your vehicle is running low on fuel, so be sure to fill up soon!
